5 Powerful Truths to Remember About Your Identity in Christ

Recently, I filled out a questionnaire for an organization I volunteer with. It asked for my favorite hobbies, my job, my marital status, the ages of my children. It wanted to know all about what I do—but nowhere did it ask who I really am. Isn’t that interesting? Whose is LaKena?

I’m not blaming the creators of the questionnaire. It’s designed to gather useful information. But it made me pause and reflect on something much deeper: How easy it is for us to define ourselves by what we do, instead of who we truly are. We live in a world where we often summarize our lives with job titles, relationships, and social media bios. It’s so tempting to describe ourselves by the roles we play—sister, mom, teacher, writer—and the tasks we complete each day.

As for me, I most certainly do all the things. I write. I shuttle a child from activity to activity. I'm divorced. I teach. And yes, I sing loudly in the shower. (Who doesn’t?) But is that all there is to me?

I am more than a mom, more than a divorcee, more than a writer, a wannabe marathoner (only in my head, I'm good with my slow jogs) . And you are more than your job, your titles, or the endless to-do list that never seems to end. Yes, those are all great things. They are roles to be thankful for, but they aren’t the full picture. The most important part of you can’t be confined to a box on a questionnaire. Your deepest, truest identity is something eternal. Something that can never be taken away from you.

I am my Father’s daughter. And no one, no circumstance, no failure, or loss can take that away from me. My job could change. I might lose the ability to write or think or cook. Even the people I love could be taken away. But nothing can ever steal my truest identity of all—I am a daughter of the King, a sister of Jesus, and a temple for His Spirit. And so are you. You are precious beyond measure, created intentionally, and loved fiercely by the God who made you.

Here’s who you really are:

You were chosen long before you ever accomplished anything. Before you did or didn’t check any boxes on that questionnaire, God decided to love you. His decision to love you is not based on your performance—it’s based on who He is. And His love for you is unshakable, no matter what.

You’re not alone. God didn’t save you and leave you to figure everything out by yourself. He gave you His Holy Spirit, who lives in you to guide you, comfort you, and strengthen you. When you feel weak, when you feel lost, you can rest in knowing that God is as close as your next breath.

Your value doesn’t come from what you do. It comes from what He has done. Grace is not something you earn by being good enough. It’s a gift, generously given to you. His grace sustains you every day, through your highs and lows, and you can depend on it—because He is faithful.

The next time you’re asked to fill out a form or introduce yourself, remember this: Yes, you are many things. But you are first and foremost a Child of God. You are loved, chosen, saved, and held by the One who made you. Nothing can ever take that identity from you.

So walk in that truth today. The world will see the wife, the mom, the student, the musician, or the businesswoman—but you? You can rest, knowing that at the heart of it all, you are His.

Praying for you…

Love,
LaKena
