Overcoming Fear and Trusting God’s Purpose for Your Life – Yes, You Can!

I Can Do It. No, I Can’t. Yes, I Can. No, I Can’t.

Have you ever had that back-and-forth conversation with yourself? You feel like God is calling you to do something—maybe reach out to someone, start a new business, teach a Bible study, write a book, or share a personal testimony. Your spirit is stirred, your heart races with excitement, and for a moment, you believe, Yes, I can do this!

But then fear whispers, No, you can’t. Doubt creeps in, listing all the reasons why you’ll fail. Before you know it, your faith takes a backseat, and fear takes the wheel.

The Parable of the Three Choices

Jesus once told a parable that we commonly call the Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30), but in reality, it’s a story about choices—three choices, to be exact. He described a man who entrusted his servants with different amounts of money (talents) before going on a journey.

  • One servant received five talents and doubled them.
  • Another received two talents and did the same.
  • The third received just one talent—but instead of investing, he buried it out of fear.

When the master returned, he was overjoyed with the first two servants, praising their faithfulness and rewarding them with more. But the last servant? He was rebuked for his fear-driven inaction.

Fear Is a Thief

The third servant let fear dictate his response. He could have taken a risk, but instead, he chose safety. He hid his talent in the ground, just as many of us hide our gifts, callings, and purpose because we’re afraid of failure, rejection, or not being “good enough.”

Fear is a thief. It steals opportunities, muffles your voice, and keeps you trapped in hesitation. Fear is also a liar. It tells you that you’re incapable, unqualified, or alone in your struggles. But that’s not the truth.

God’s Word says:

  • “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7)
  • “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9)

Faith Over Fear: Making the Bold Choice

You have a choice—just like the three servants. Will you invest what God has given you, or will you bury it in fear?

It’s okay to feel fear, but it’s not okay to let it stop you. Faith is not the absence of fear; it’s choosing to move forward despite it.

Practical Ways to Overcome Fear and Walk in Faith:

  1. Acknowledge the Fear, but Don’t Let It Lead – It’s natural to feel afraid when stepping into something new. Acknowledge it, but don’t submit to it. Speak God’s truth over your fears.
  2. Take the First Step – Sometimes, the biggest battle is simply getting started. Take one small step toward what God is calling you to do.
  3. Surround Yourself with Encouragers – Find people who will uplift you, pray with you, and remind you of God’s promises.
  4. Meditate on Scripture – Replace fearful thoughts with God’s truth. Keep verses like Philippians 4:13 (“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”) in front of you.
  5. Pray for Courage – Ask God to give you the boldness to step out in faith. Pray as the psalmist did: “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.” (Psalm 56:3)

Your Yes Unlocks More

Here’s something powerful to remember: Your obedience to God in the small things leads to bigger assignments. When you step out in faith and say “yes” to God, He entrusts you with more.

Jesus said in Luke 16:10, “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much.” Your one talent—your gift, your calling, your passion—is meant to be used, not hidden.

Declare It Today

Let’s make a declaration together:

  • I will not bury my calling in a shallow grave of fear.
  • I will not allow my ‘no, I can’t’ to overshadow God’s ‘yes, you can.’
  • I will walk in faith, not fear.

Big assignments begin with a thousand tiny yesses. Invest the talent you have, and watch God entrust you with more!

A Prayer for Boldness

Lord, thank You for entrusting me with gifts and talents. Sometimes, I struggle to see them clearly, but I trust that You have a purpose for me. Help me to be bold, to step out in faith, and to invest in the lives of others. I refuse to let fear hold me back. I choose to trust You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
